5 Ways to Transform Your Home Into a Cozy Cocoon This Fall

5 Ways to Transform Your Home Into a Cozy Cocoon This Fall

As the days get colder, it’s only natural to consider a fall season home makeover. With cozy nights offering relief from the outside temperatures, what better place to wind down and warm up than in your own home?

Your home should be a loving and safe environment, especially in the lead-up to the holiday season. Getting your home ready for fall and winter can be the perfect way to combat those darker, colder days by injecting some much-needed TLC into your space.

With the right approach to fall interiors, your home can become a sanctuary for happiness and festive memory making. The best part? You can transform your home into a “cozy cocoon” with just a few simple home improvements.

Rest assured, there’s no need to spend a lot of money or start breaking down walls. You don’t even have to open a paint can if you don’t want to! Instead, we’re suggesting five ways to make your surroundings feel more unique, cozy, and uplifting — the easy way.

1. Frame your fall season home makeover the right way

Do you have pictures or prints you’ve been meaning to frame and hang on the wall? During fall and winter, framed pictures can be a great way to add a sense of fun and personality to your home, while also introducing new color palettes and shapes.

We suggest framing pictures that have meaning or that bring you a sense of joy on a daily basis. The more personality the better — make your fall interiors really say something about you! Some of our favorite ideas include:

  • Fun family portraits (less formal portraits and photo memories work best for a relaxed feel)
  • Landscapes of your favorite places
  • Inspiring quotes
  • Postcards you love
  • Your favorite album covers
  • Quirky memorabilia, e.g. Playbills from your favorite theater shows

Don’t forget that it can also be a good idea to take down some decorations that have been up for a while and no longer hold meaning. Changing things up can be therapeutic, so transform your walls with a fresh look.

Top tip: Gallery walls might feel slightly overdone these days, but trust us, they work! Before hanging your frames, always test out your layout on the floor. While irregular patterns and shapes will work in some rooms, a more sophisticated look will require a uniform layout… so choose wisely.

2. To prepare your home for fall, embrace what makes your mind happy

Do you have a space in your home where you can really center yourself? This might be a room where you can go to read, meditate, journal, or even just take a few quiet moments for yourself.

This type of space doesn’t even have to be an entire room. It can be a corner where you add comfy pillows or a few objects that are close to your heart.

Smell can also play a big role in making us feel more at ease and safe in our surroundings. This is why we love adding a small table to a room where we can burn candles, incense, or even an essential oil diffuser. Whatever scents you love — surround yourself with them!

Having a special place where you can relax and ground yourself is key to being happy in your home. So why not make it part of your morning ritual to honor the day and the space you’re in? Your home is yours to enjoy; embrace that fact.

3. A fall season interior should always have plants

Adding greenery to your home during fall can really change up the dynamics of “seasonal change.” As well as being great for lifting the general atmosphere in your home with freshly blooming flowers, plants are known for making rooms feel more mature and aesthetic.

But what if you don’t have a green thumb? Don’t worry, there’s plenty of plants that don’t require expert care. Even if you decide to go for faux instead of real plants, it will still add a special touch.

Two of our favorite additions to a room leading up to the holiday season include:

The Christmas cactus

If you’re from Arizona, you might already be familiar with the Christmas Cactus. When in bloom, the flower (usually a vibrant shade of fuchsia) can inject some much-needed color into your home. It can also be a great conversation starter, so make sure you place it somewhere it will get noticed.

Considered to be a low-maintenance plant overall, you can usually persuade your Christmas Cactus to flower by introducing it to cool night temperatures of 50°–55°F starting in early November.

Poinsettias

Poinsettias are another great addition to your home in the lead-up to the holiday season. Even though several varieties of poinsettia exist, it’s the vibrant red leaves that attract most people to this plant during the colder months.

However, what many people don’t know is that these plants can be tricky to care for in winter. They’re a lover of warmth and light, so keep this in mind when picking a location for your poinsettia. Another thing to be aware of is that they are poisonous to pets, so keep them out of reach of dogs and cats.

To prevent your poinsettia from wilting, keep it away from cool air and never allow it to go dry. We suggest watering the plant when the surface soil feels dry to the touch, so don’t be afraid to get your hands dirty!

4. Get your home ready for fall with some new pillows and blankets

The great thing about fall and winter is that the purchase of new pillows and blankets can always be justified. After all, it’s a great way to save on the heating bill!

If you’re working with a more natural space, feel free to go bold and add some bright colors. If you’re looking for more peace and tranquility in your room, keep the tones soft and neutral.

It’s also worth remembering that different textiles will bring contrast and character to your interiors, so don’t be afraid to mix fabrics across all of your soft furnishings. Just some of our favorite fabrics for fall season interiors include:

  • Velvet
  • Corduroy
  • Wool
  • Fleece
  • Cashmere

5. Fall house maintenance can be easy with removable wallpapers

Peel-and-stick wallpapers are an easy way to change the entire vibe of a room, instantly. With peel-and-stick wallpaper, you can add personality and freshen things up — all without having to commit to one design for the next 10 years.

Why not try something bold by going for a textured brick or tropical jungle wallpaper? Or maybe you’d prefer to keep things classy with a floral or geometric print. For even the minimalists amongst us, there’s a peel-and-stick wallpaper to suit every taste.

Tip: Have an old dresser or kitchen unit that’s looking a little tired? You can use removable wallpapers to design or up-cycle home furniture with more of your personality. With minimal cost and effort, you can transform even the most unassuming pieces of furniture into something you’ll want to make a focus of your room!

The best time to make your house a home

There really is no better time than now to make your home a comfortable and cozy cocoon. You can even make it your pre-holiday season project and have fun with it.

Even the smallest of changes can have a huge impact on how your home feels, and as a result, can improve how you feel in yourself too!
